VA Announces Special Relief Following Maui Wildfires

VA issued Circular 26-23-16 (Circular), describing measures mortgagees may employ to provide relief to Hawaii home loan borrowers affected by wildfires. The measures include: the forbearance of loan payments; a 90-day foreclosure moratorium; the waiver of late charges; and the suspension of credit bureau and VA reporting. The Circular also encourages servicers to extend special forbearance to Reserve and National Guard members that experience financial difficulties as a result of their service. The relief measures went into effect August 18, 2023.
