Oregon Requires Notice of Veterans Assistance for Borrowers Subject to Foreclosure

Oregon passed a bill, requiring that a “notice of veterans assistance” be provided to borrowers subject to foreclosure. The “notice of veterans assistance” must state:

(1) That if the borrower is a veteran of the armed forces, assistance may be available from a county veterans’ service officer or community action agency;

(2) The contact information for a service officer for the county in which the borrower lives and contact information for a community action agency that serves the area where the borrower lives; and

(3) That contact information for a local county veterans’ service officer and community action agency may be obtained by calling a 2-1-1 information service.

The “notice of veterans assistance” must be included with the “foreclosure notice” (nonjudicial foreclosure) or the summons and complaint (judicial foreclosure). The “notice of veterans assistance” is required for all foreclosures that involve a single-family, owner occupied dwelling.

The bill becomes effective January 1, 2020.
