Ohio Requires Registration of Mortgage Servicers

Ohio passed a bill requiring the registration of mortgage servicers. Under the bill, a person may not act as a mortgage servicer in Ohio without obtaining a certificate of registration, unless exempt. In addition, the bill requires a lender or servicer collecting a debt to mail a “debt collection notice” to the borrower if the mortgage loan is a junior lien loan secured by residential real property. The bill becomes effective March 20, 2018.
